Specsavers joins forces with emoji® brand to show specs are chic, not geek

Specsavers has worked with the emoji® brand to launch four new icons to show that glasses are not just for geeks and grannies.

It is now asking the public to vote for their favourite, ahead of petitioned creators, Unicode, for inclusion in mobile keyboards.

Lucy Abbott, social media manager, at Specsavers says: ‘The only emoji® icons with glasses as it stands are the geek and granny which is just not representative of modern culture. Glasses have become a key fashion statement, so we want to celebrate this with a new emoji®.

This is about being proud to wear glasses and we hope everyone gets voting on our social channels.’

The four new icons show the happy face emoji® in different designs including a red cat-eye and a smart tortoiseshell frame– a far cry from what currently represents the glasses wearer.

Marco Hüsges, CEO and founder from the emoji company says: ‘It is great to see that our brand and icons are sparking conversation both in the digital and real world. We are constantly updating our emoji® brand icon library, so who knows, perhaps the new icons created for Specsavers will go live on emoji.com in the near future.’

The vote will be going live on Specsavers’ Twitter and Facebook pages from 6am until 5pm on July 17. The top two designs will then be shared on Specsavers Instagram channel between 6pm and 12pm to find out the nation’s favourite spectacle wearing emoji.
