Off with a bang!

Press release

With Bonfire Night just around the corner, many of us will be heading outside to watch fireworks displays. The bright lights and colours always delight but do you need to take steps to protect your hearing from the loud bangs?
‘According to UK regulations, the legal limit for fireworks is 120 decibels’, says Specsavers chief audiologist Gordon Harrison.
‘That’s a huge 35 decibels above the level of noise where hearing damage occurs. The good news is, if you distance yourself enough from the fireworks – ideally at least 20 metres from where the fireworks are lit then this should diminish the sound to a safe level.
‘Pyrotechnicians should be aware of this and take the necessary precautions, so you should be safe watching an organised display but make sure you follow this advice if you are going to a private display. If you are lighting fireworks yourself make sure you invest in a pair of ear plugs.’
